Although she is still young, Thong Ae is beginning to take on a caring role around the calves. She communicates with them calmly and helps guide their interactions, showing a growing ability to balance patience with gentle leadership.

Near the river, her responsible side often gives way to play. She may lie down while the younger elephants climb across her body, or follow them through the sand as they explore and tumble together. By joining their games while remaining attentive, Thong Ae is gradually learning how to care for younger members of the herd.

The confidence she shows today stands in contrast to the beginning of her life. Thong Ae was rescued as a calf after being used for street begging. The experience formed part of her early story, but it has not prevented her from developing into an intelligent, energetic, and deeply social elephant.

In safety, she has been able to build relationships on her own terms. She spends time with playful youngsters as well as older elephants and remains closely connected to her adopted family members, Jenny, Sri Nuan, and Faa Mai. Her lively personality sometimes brings a little mischief, yet it also reveals how naturally she has embraced a life with greater freedom and choice.

One of Thong Ae’s closest relationships is with Lek. She frequently chooses to remain nearby and follows her with clear affection. She has even developed a playful habit of removing Lek’s boots—a curious ritual whose meaning remains known only to Thong Ae.

Their companionship has grown through familiarity, care, and mutual trust. It is a quiet example of the meaningful bonds that can form when an elephant is treated with patience and respect.

Thong Ae’s journey reminds us that rescue is not only about leaving hardship behind. It is also about creating the conditions in which an elephant can rediscover companionship, express her individual character, and choose where she belongs.

As she continues to grow, Thong Ae is becoming a reassuring presence for younger elephants and a joyful companion to those around her. Her life shows what can emerge when safety is followed by time, understanding, and the freedom to live among a caring herd—a future that Elephant Rise hopes every rescued elephant will one day know.
